Live your travels over again by writing about them and become a travel writer in the process. Join award-winning travel author Laurie Gough in a full-day intensive workshop focusing on what makes a good travel story. You'll learn that to be an effective travel writer you must lead the reader into the wonder of the place you're describing, always remembering that your experience can only be conveyed through details. We'll discuss 'finding' the story and how this isn't something you can anticipate before leaving; travelling for a story as opposed to travelling for travel's sake; how to craft your stories; how the 'quest' makes for a good travel story; the various types of travel writing; how to begin your stories to catch the reader's (and an editor's) attention, and how to get published in today's rapidly changing market. We'll do lots of fun and inspiring writing exercises and you'll have the opportunity to share (and be given feedback on) your travel writing - or a travel piece you've been working on at home - with Laurie and the group.

My workshop is part of Wakefest, a multi-arts festival in the gorgeous and eccentric village of Wakefield (where I live), half an hour from the Parliament Buildings of downtown Ottawa.
Wakefest is a three-day extravaganza of the arts, beginning with the Naked Launch (to launch the Wakefield Nude Calendar which this year I'm…ahem…involved in) on Thursday evening.
Other highlights include one of my favourite musicians Lynn Miles hosting a song writing workshop; an African dance troupe from Burundi performing on the covered bridge; the Hilotrons (funk-disco band) at the Black Sheep Inn; film screenings on covered bridge; musicians Chris Brown and Kate Fenner, Gord Downie tribute at Kaffé 1870, and much much more...
